Lines, forms and their application

Hello, my dear seekers!

All physical objects around us consist of lines (and forms, because our space is three-dimensional) and, of course, we ourselves, humans, are no exception. Different lines, even at an instinctive level, carry a lot of information - the symbolism of linearity is used everywhere. We all understand that an upward arrow indicates progress, development, and a downward arrow indicates a decline. The contour of the rounded cloud seems soft and harmless at the level of sensations, and multiple sharp corners warn of danger.

The application of this symbolism in relation to style is understandable - on its basis, you can create an aggressive / soft / perky / romantic image using the appropriate characteristic lines. But if we want to express and decorate ourselves through lines, then we need to know only one rule - like-for-like.

A flat, graphic, angular face will look rough and painful against the background of rounded lush lines, and a soft voluminous face against the background of aggressive graphics will turn from cute to puffy.

A face with aggressive linearity and a face with a soft line/shape in a "native" environment and in an alien one:

The same rule applies to the figure - the lines of clothing should echo the lines of the body. There are probably rare cases in which the linearity of the face and body do not match. Nothing is impossible, but the analysis of this appearance will require a deeper approach.

For all other cases, there are my collages :)

In collages, I use the 9 most common types of lines in nature: Soft, Elastic, Rigid, Languid, Flowing, Flexible, Solid, Fragile and Aggressive. However, there are individuals who require a separate name for their linearity. Several (at times, quite a large number) lines can also be combined in one person, but it is enough to single out 1-2 main ones to apply to the style.

I talk more about lines and shapes in these three articles:

  • Relaxed lines

  • Static lines

  • Intense lines

I hope this information will be useful for you!

To new words!
